The most unbelievable thing about Sara and her twin sister Tegan (otherwise known as Canadian singer/songwriter duo Tegan & Sara) is that "Walking With a Ghost"-the infectious, late 2004 power-pop hit that was eventually milked for even more download mileage by the White Stripes-is still a totally sweet jam even though we've heard it like 10,000 times.
After releasing So Jealous, the album that spawned "Walking With a Ghost," in September of 2004, the sisters spent the next 18 months on the road, touring with (among others) the Killers, Cake, and comedian Eugene Mirman. "It's crazy, because you get kind of addicted to the touring machine," Quin says. "I'm a little bit scared to stop because I love it so much. But we need to stop, because we can't really write on the road. I don't understand how people like Ryan Adams write so many records and still manage to tour so much. If we don't stop touring, there won't be a new record."
It's Not Fun. Don't Do It! is not the new Tegan & Sara record. In fact, it's not technically a record at all-it's more like a DVD with a complete live set, two documentaries, music videos, and, um, a puppet show. "My favorite part of the DVD is this crazy video that a fan made for us," Quin explains. "She's like 17, and lives in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, which is this really desolate place. She made marionettes of everyone in the band, and they're amazing. They're so intricate. And then she made a fake tour documentary. It kinda looks like Team America or something."
Yeah, but how sick are you of playing "Walking With a Ghost"? "Well, it's funny," Quin laughs. "I really love So Jealous and touring the songs, but I'm sick of some of our older stuff that we just don't play anymore. As the years pass, you wanna change them and you get different ideas about how to work the songs so you'll like them again. I'm not tired of the songs on So Jealous yet, but I'm really looking forward to working on some new material-let's put it that way."
